For our New Year’s Eve dinner, wala akong ka-plano plano ano ihahanda. I overheard lang my brother-in-law that they cooked Baked Salmon for Noche Buena so ginaya ko.
I googled how to do it.
Mukhang madali so I bought Salmon and asparagus from Rustan’s.
Like I always say, if I can cook it, most probably, the rest of the world can cook it too.
Here’s what you need:
- Salmon, ofcourse. I just forgot ano weight nito. Around half kilo siguro
- 1/3 cup squeezed lemon
- 1/2 cup butter
- a lot of garlic
- Olive oil
- black pepper
First, arrange everything inside the baking dish that you’ll use. I picked asparagus lang para hindi complicated. All you need to do is cut it because only the top portion is good for eating. You can put mushrooms and potatoes too on the side. When I googled how to cook the potatoes with the salmon, iseseparate bake mo pa pala siya. Never mind. Ang complicated. Lelz. Next time, I will put na lang din garlic mushrooms for additional side dish too. But I have to buy a bigger baking dish for that. Put olive oil on the baking dish para hindi dumikit yung asparagus and salmon.
Second, rub the garlic on the Salmon. I rubbed it siguro for 2 whole minutes to make sure lumasa yung garlic sa Salmon
Third, pour the butter. I poked small holes in the salmon before I poured the butter para sumiksik yung lasa. Nilamas ko din para manuoot more. Napadami ata yung butter na nilagay ko. As in nagswimming siya sa butter. Lelz. But that’s how I like it. Masarap siya for me.
Fourth, pour the lemon of the Salmon.
Fifth, season with pepper and salt.
Sixth, put inside the pre heated oven 360 degrees. 8 minutes lang daw ang pagbake ng salmon so I made sure to use a timer. When the timer alarm sounded, I took it out of the oven.
Men, na-inlove ako sa Baked Salmon ko.
Masarap daw sabi nina Russ and Alvin. I tasted it too and ang sarap nga! I was extremely proud of myself!
Since feeling cook na talaga ako, I attempted to cook naman Pork Adobo last weekend.
I got a recipe from a blog online. Ito ang learnings ko. If tatanga tanga ka pa magluto, you have to pick a recipe for dummies talaga. As in you have to follow a recipe that is super very detailed.
Sabi dun sa recipe that I was following, I have to let the adobo simmer for 50 to 60 minutes. I placed a cover on top of the pan and set an alarm for 50 minutes. So I let it simmer lang dun. Around 50 minutes, I decided to check it out.
Lech. Nasunog ko yung Adobo.
And the eggs that I boiled were ummmm.. not hard boiled enough.
I went to the room and cried. Nagulat si Alvin. Sa taranta niya siguro, nayakap niya ako. Bakit daw? I told him nasunog yung Adobo. We went out and checked it.
ALVIN: Hindi mo ba hinalo?
ME: Hindi. Sabi let it simmer for 1 hour.
ALVIN: Hindi mo chineck?
ME: Akala ko bawa tanggalin yung takip eh. Baka hindi maluto yung meat.
ALVIN: Di bale. Lyn, maghain ka na. Kakainin natin yan.
I went to the dining table and cried more there. I felt so stupid. How could I mess up Adobo?! Even my cousin who grew up in the States and has never set foot in the Philippines can cook Adobo!
Alvin went to get Anika in her room. Medyo matagal sila lumabas ng kwarto. Mukhang may briefing na naganap because when Anika went up to me, she rubbed my back and said, “Nanay, don’t cry anymore. It looks good!”
Sunog, pero it looks good daw.
Lalo tuloy ako naiyak.
And so we ate the Adobo. They ate the Adobo. But they still ate it.
Naiyak na naman ako.
Sa sama ng loob, I took a nap.
When I woke up, Alvin told me to try cooking again. Sabi ko ayaw ko na. Sabi niya to cook something I know. And then Alvin told me to cook Adobong Puti. This time daw, he’ll guide me.
We got the recipe from Yummy.PH.
This time, after the vinegar boiled, naghahalo ako every now and then.
It was a success.
Janis and her family ate dinner at our house that night. My goddaughter said that it was masarap. Alvin said masarap daw. Charot.
In fairness, my second try was a lot better than the first one. Actually, masarap talaga siya eh. I feel like giving the normal Adobo another chance tuloy. Hindi pwedeng hindi ko makuha yun.
So there. That’s my love and hate relationship with cooking but I will still continue to learn how to cook. Ang sarap ng feeling watching Alvin and Anika eat what I cooked.
Let’s do that again, shall we? Babalitaan ko kayo =)
